The "Status" panel normally displays users from your contact list that are online. The "Show All" option displays all contacts - even those that are offline.

To send an instant message: double click on the person's name and a message dialog will appear. Enter the message, then click the "Send" button.

Unlike ICQ, AOL's Instant Messenger doesn't allow you to send messages to contacts that are offline as this message shows.
